IS PLAYING A VICTIM TO MANKADING IN CRICKET ETHICAL, SPORTING AND MORAL?

Mankading controversy (Named after India's cricketer Vinoo Mankad after he ran out Australian batsman Brown in December 1947) has been fanned by a few frustrated English commentators, sport lovers and cricketers after England lost their 5 ODI series to Sri Lanka by a thin margin of 3-2. The incident occurred when Sri Lankan spinner Charitha Senanayake mankaded wicket keeper-batsman Jos Buttler in Birmingham ODI, after having warned him twice prior to Mankading him.
As per ICC playing condition, 42.11 revised in 2011, "The bowler is permitted, before releasing the ball and provided he has not completed his usual delivery swing, to attempt to run out the non-striker. Whether the attempt is successful or not, the ball shall not count as one of the over. If the bowler fails in an attempt to run out the non-striker, the umpire shall call and signal dead ball as soon as possible."

Crying over Mankading by cricketers as wrong and unethical, by itself is either cheating or ignorance of the rules of the game. As cricketers or administrators or commentators they ought to know the rules of the game. As any other rule of the game, the batsmen need not be warned by a bowler akin to a stumping by wicket keeper.
Batsmen in the guise of being injured in the game used to avail the services of runners while batting which was misused by a few teams with bulky and/ or less fitness players. Rightly, the rule was scraped by ICC in the early 2010’s. It has become a common practice in the modern game for batsmen to accumulate runs by stealing quick singles or twos just by tapping ball around. These stolen few runs play a vital role in games with narrow wins. Incidentally, some unsporting and unethical batsmen are taking unfair advantage by leaving the popping crease before the ball is released to negate run outs. I don’t see a difference between a batsman advancing down the pitch and getting stumped with that of Mankading.  Any batsman given out mankaded needs neither a debate nor approval of the fielding captain in the guise of ethics and sportsmanship as it completely adheres to the ICC rules.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan’s justification that Jos Butler was not trying to steal a single but was a few inches out of the propping crease is uncalled-for. If he is not stealing a run, why is he out of the propping crease thrice? To my dismay, the most irrational comment that appalled me had been from former England spinner Graeme Swanne who said “The mankad is just wrong even though it’s not illegal. It’s like cuddling your sister whilst watching a film”. Leaving the Mankading episode aside, it shows his ethical and moral plunge as a human being for having the ideas to cuddle a sister whilst watching modern era films mostly with considerable explicit adult content.

Let’s look in at the double speaks of some of the modern day cricketer messiahs’ who moan and whine about the Spirit of Cricket, while morphing the favourable situations to their advantage.
1.  Current England captain Alastair Cook, moaning about the Buttler incident says "I've never seen it before in a game. I was pretty disappointed with it to be honest with you. I'd hope I wouldn't do it."
However, all of us will be mistaken if we think either Cook or England have set high standards in sportsmanship, which is definitely not the case. They defended players like
a.  Stuart Broad who stood his ground having edged the ball to slip in a Ashes test match in Australia in 2013;
b.  Jonathan Trott who scored off a ball that had clearly slipped out of Ravindra Jadeja's hand;
c.  English cricketers and officials were silent on players caught tampering with cricket balls, sometimes with mint-laden saliva and sometimes with saw dust.

2.  Former Sri Lankan captain and current player Mahela Jayawardene, two years ago said "I don’t play like that... I wouldn't have got the bails off in the first place, to be honest. Try and keep it nice and clean.", when Ravichandran Ashwin mankaded Lahiru Thirimanne in Brisbane. However, the same cricketer defended his team mate after the match in Birmingham, "It is fair enough, I think. We all need to play by the rules. If the other sides are not going by the rules, then they're not playing by the spirit, so what can you do?".
Furthermore, Mahela was also a party to the unethical incident when a Sri Lankan bowler bowled a no ball just to deny Virendra Sehwag a century.

Hence, it is quite obvious that some of the unsporting cricketers and experts of the game only whine and moan about the spirit of the game when they’re on the wrong side of an incident. ICC needs to give more teeth to on field umpires and third umpire to implement the Mankading rule on par with a NOBALL. If the bowler doesn’t run-out a batsman who is out of the propping crease, but noticed either by the on field umpires or the third umpire, one run shall be deducted from the team score as well as that of the batsman. There need not be a warning from bowler for Mankading the batsman but should be treated on par with stumping, to avoid giving unfair advantage to batsmen.

INVESTMENT IN ORNAMENTAL GOLD: IS IT WISE OR FOOLISH?

The Global recession of 2008 and European debt crisis has accelerated the investments in to gold as investors and speculators, having lost appetite for highly volatile and risky paper assets (major currencies and government backed securities) and switched over to relatively safe Gold investments.
Moreover, investments in to Gold in India is further accentuated by the conjecture that the yellow metal is a natural hedge against the high inflation and supposition that Value to Price ratio is nearly one or even higher.
The above conjecture in theory looks convincing and smart at the outset, if the Value to Price ratio is nearly one or even higher. There are various avenues for investing in Gold viz., Gold ETF’s, Mutual funds, Physical Gold bars, and Ornamental gold. However, Indian middle class people, who are highly susceptible to impacts by government price and policy actions, tax structure changes, upheavals in banking & financial sectors and consumer inflationary pressures, are lured in to investing in Ornamental Gold negating the additional costs involved in this asset class.
All investments in any asset class have its own positives and negatives and investment worthiness needs to be evaluated from time to time. The worthiness of an investment is determined by evaluating the asset quality, capital protection guarantee of the asset during adverse economic conditions, low acquisition and maintenance costs of an asset, Nett. Rate of Returns it generates during its life time, usefulness, and ease of liquidity of the asset. Let’s evaluate the worthiness of investing in ornamental gold duly considering the investment parameters:

S.no
Evaluating parameters
Factors determining worthiness
Appreciation/Erosion in asset value
1
Quality
Purity of gold and Hallmarking
Purity of gold may not be of the level that is being claimed, since the hallmarking services test only a fraction of the gold jewellery submitted for testing, thus raising concerns of hallmarked jewellery as well.
-5% to -10% (say)
2
Capital protection guarantee
Life time investment
Since, the investments are for longer term, the nett. Capital alone is protected.
0%
3
Acquisition costs
High making charges
High, especially by high end stores.
-5% to -20% (Unrecoverable)
Wastage charges
Very high, especially for exotic designs.
-5% to -30% (Unrecoverable)
Losses in Weighing & Embedded Stone charges
Trust in Gold jewellery business is evaluated to be the minimum. Many major jewelers are found to be compromising on the weight and quality parameters by including the precious stone weight as that of gold.
-0% to -20% (Unrecoverable)
4
Maintenance costs
Constraints in physical storage
Needs to rent a bank locker to store our valuables.
-1% to -2%
5
Perennial Returns
Nil
Considering an average appreciation of 8% and 8% of inflation over a period of 25 years, the nett. Rate of returns (NRR) is nil.
0%

6
Usefulness
Used occasionally
Most of the ornamental jewellery is used by women rarely during major family celebrations.
+2%
7
Ease of liquidity
High but depreciated returns if hard cash is required.
Major jewellery houses are ready to exchange the gold sold by them at market rate and very few are willing to pay in cash subject to a deduction of 5-10% of the value. Gold may not be evaluated fairly both qualitatively and quantitatively, if gold ornament on sale is bought from a different jeweller.
-5% to -10% (say)
Inflation adjusted Nett. Asset value (Pre-tax):
60% of the original investment amount will remain with the investors.

Also, it may be noted that the cost of Gold in India is higher due to depreciation of Indian currency vis-à-vis green back, import duties and government taxes, the latter two costs being irrecoverable when an investor sells the gold in open market. Hence, it is unmistakably evident from the above table that the investment in gold in an ornament form will lose 40% of the front end value for the metal.  It is suggested the gold ornaments may be purchased, if inevitable, more as a consumer durable rather than as a long term investment. It is prudent and wise to delink personal/ family investments and ornamental gold and instead invest in other asset classes for better returns and capital appreciation.

BEAUTY OF NUMBERS & MATHEMATICS

1 x 8 + 1 = 9
12 x 8 + 2 = 98
123 x 8 + 3 = 987
1234 x 8 + 4 = 9876
12345 x 8 + 5 = 98765
123456 x 8 + 6 = 987654
1234567 x 8 + 7 = 9876543
12345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432
123456789 x 8 + 9 = 987654321

1 x 9 + 2 = 11
12 x 9 + 3 = 111
123 x 9 + 4 = 1111
1234 x 9 + 5 = 11111
12345 x 9 + 6 = 111111
123456 x 9 + 7 = 1111111
1234567 x 9 + 8 = 11111111
12345678 x 9 + 9 = 111111111
123456789 x 9 +10= 1111111111

9 x 9 + 7 = 88
98 x 9 + 6 = 888
987 x 9 + 5 = 8888
9876 x 9 + 4 = 88888
98765 x 9 + 3 = 888888
987654 x 9 + 2 = 8888888
9876543 x 9 + 1 = 88888888
98765432 x 9 + 0 = 888888888

Brilliant, isn't it?

And look at this symmetry:

1 x 1 = 1
11 x 11 = 121
111 x 111 = 12321
1111 x 1111 = 1234321
11111 x 11111 = 123454321
111111 x 111111 = 12345654321
1111111 x 1111111 = 1234567654321
11111111 x 11111111 = 123456787654321
111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321

BRAIN TUMOR RISK INCREASE BY 290% AFTER 10 YEARS OF CELLPHONE USE

How long have you been using your cellphone? Using a mobile device for any length of time is damaging to some degree, but new research is shedding light on just how significant of an influence extended cellphone use has on the brain. In a newly-released study conducted at the Örebro Hospita in Sweden, it was revealed that 10 years of cellphone use resulted in an average 290% increased risk of brain tumor development. Interestingly, the tumor development was found on the side of the head in which the cellphone was most used.
It’s important to understand that cellphone use has gone up significantly since 10 years ago, meaning that more recent results may show an even higher risk. Statistically, the average person in Britain and many other developed nations will soon have about 2 cellphones each. With the increased number of cellphones on the citizens of the world comes something known as ‘second-hand cellphone use’. Just as with smoking, sitting in a bus, airplane, or train will expose you to upwards of several hundred cellphones at one time.
Another key factor is that 10 years ago far less young children were using cellphones –a select few having them as ‘emergency’ contact devices. Now, it’s not uncommon to see children under 10 chatting or texting on their cellphone throughout the day. It is a well known fact that developing children are more affected by cellphone radiation, with behavioral disorders known to develop from cellphone use at an early age. It is also known that cellphone radiation is actually changing the brain in ways that are not currently understood.
In other words, the large-scale global use of cellphones is essentially a massive biological experiment. The true long-term effects will only be absolutely known when they occur. Following the research, this will likely be a historical spike in brain tumor development and damage. As you certainly know, the best way of protecting yourself from cellphone radiation is to simply not use it. When turning the phone off, it reduces the emission rate close to zero. This is not always an option for many, so there are a few vital methods of reducing the damage:
·      Turn your phone off at night or when you are not using it.
·      Place your phone in ‘airplane’ mode if you cannot turn it off entirely.
·      Look into and heavily research radiation protection options for your phone. Be aware there are a number of fake items out there, so always look for a product brand with real research behind it.
·      Try and use the ‘speaker’option on your cellphone when possible, holding it in your hand away from your head.

MOVEMENT FOR RESTORATION OF DILAPIDATED VAKULA DEVI TEMPLE

CONCISE ENGLISH TRANSLATION: Vakula Devi in Kaliyug is Yashoda Devi in Dwaparayug. Lord Krishna gives a boon to Yashoda Devi that she will witness and perform his marriage in Kaliyug. As per Puranas, she is instrumental in performing marriage of Lord Srinivasa with Goddess Padmavathi. A temple dedicated to her is in Tirupati since many centuries, albeit in ruins. Daily rituals were performed in the temple, dedicated to her, till the Indian Independence. However, unlawful stone mining around the temple has led to deterioration of the surroundings as well as the neglect had dilapidated the temple.
This story is not just confined to this temple alone, but for many temples in India.
Sri Paripoornananda Swamiji of Sri Math with other Hindu pontiffs has taken upon themselves to lead a movement to retrofit the temple and restore the sanctity of the temple. Let us all join the movement by informing the fellow devotees of the need to save our heritage monuments, religious places and sites from unlawful destruction by land grabbers and greedy businessmen.
